How is RLE different from cataract surgery?
The technique is the same one, performed on the same LENSAR® Laser System: the eye’s natural crystalline lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. The difference is timing and purpose. RLE is performed electively to correct presbyopia and reduce dependence on glasses, before a cataract has developed.
Am I too young or too old for RLE?
Anyone who is over the age of 40 and dependent on glasses or contacts is a potential candidate, and there is no strict upper age limit. Candidacy depends on the health of your eyes rather than a birthday, which is what the free consultation is for.
Is the result permanent?
Yes. The clear vision you receive after your RLE surgery will be the vision you have for the rest of your life. Because your natural lens has been replaced, it cannot go on to develop a cataract.
Will I still need reading glasses afterward?
Premium IOLs are designed to reduce how much you depend on glasses, and the two lenses do it differently. The TECNIS Symfony® delivers a reduction in how often patients wear glasses; the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® substantially reduces the need for them. Your surgeon will set clear expectations for the lens you choose.
How do I choose between the two lenses?
Your surgeon reviews your diagnostic imaging alongside your visual priorities — how much you read, how much you drive at night, how you spend your working day — and recommends the premium IOL built for how you actually use your eyes. Both options are walked through at your free consultation.
What is recovery like?
RLE is performed on a simple outpatient basis and usually takes only 10–15 minutes per eye. Most patients notice improved vision within a short time and return to normal activities quickly, following their care team’s guidance.
Does insurance cover refractive lens exchange?
RLE performed electively for presbyopia is generally considered a refractive procedure, so it typically isn’t covered the way medically necessary cataract surgery is. Our team walks through CareCredit financing and FSA/HSA options at your free consultation.
What does the LENSAR® Laser System do?
It uses Laser with Augmented Reality™ technology to build a sophisticated, 3-D view of your eye, which is used to plan the removal of your natural lens before the procedure begins. That planning supports a more precise, personalized procedure than manual technique alone.
